Inquisita

Legal Discovery with AI

Inquisita is a US-based legal technology startup founded by engineers and attorneys to automate legal discovery. Our challenge was to build an intelligent AI platform that could help legal teams surface the right evidence from thousands of documents — without reading every page.

The Mission

In the US legal system, discovery allows parties to demand documents and evidence from each other under oath. In practice, this means lawyers — often fresh graduates — spend hundreds of hours sifting through financial records, emails, and contracts looking for a needle in a haystack.

Opposing parties can flood each other with document requests as a deliberate tactic, draining time and resources. Identifying grounds for objection or finding specific evidence requires deep legal context, not just keyword matching. And handling sensitive client data demands strict compliance and security — a high bar for any SaaS product.

Inquisita needed an AI that could understand what a lawyer was really asking for, break it down intelligently, and return only what matters.

The Solution

We built an AI legal tooling powered by LangGraph and Amazon Bedrock. We focused on:

Smart query understanding: The AI understands what a lawyer is really asking and breaks it down into precise, targeted searches — surfacing the right evidence from thousands of documents, not just documents that happen to contain the same words.

Meaning-based search: Powered by Amazon OpenSearch, the platform finds documents based on legal context and intent — so a search for employment evidence returns genuinely relevant results, not just keyword matches.

Instant document processing: Any legal document — scanned PDFs, inconsistently formatted files, whatever opposing counsel sends — is automatically processed and made fully searchable via Amazon Bedrock. No manual preparation required.

Multi-tenant security: Every law firm operates in a fully isolated environment with dedicated encryption and SOC II compliance built in — sensitive client data never crosses tenant boundaries.

Credit-based pricing: Firms pay per action — message, upload, or discovery request — based on actual usage costs, making AI-assisted discovery accessible to smaller practices that couldn’t justify a flat monthly fee.

Working with Apex Lab was a superb experience. They have a wealth of knowledge in AWS and modern AI frameworks, exceptional frontend development skills, and communication skills that enabled us to deliver on ambitious engineering goals.

The Outcome

Document review tasks that previously took a junior associate weeks can now be completed in hours. The AI applies consistent analytical rigor to every document, reducing the risk of missed evidence or overlooked objections.

The credit-based pricing model has resonated strongly with beta customers. Smaller firms and cases that couldn’t justify a flat monthly fee now have access to AI-assisted discovery for the first time.

Inquisita is currently in a controlled production rollout with strategic law firm partners, with a roadmap that includes support for additional document formats and integrations with existing legal practice management tools.
